My Summer Refreshing Soap

Posted by scentsthatmatter in April 28, 2010

I know that Jean Nate’ is an old scent.  But it is a good one for summer.  It’s light and fresh after you have been in the hot sun or other exhausting summer experiences.  That’s what I want to survive the up coming summer.  A nice refreshing scent I can take a shower with that will be both pretty and put a spring in my step.   I spent the morning playing with scents until I found a scent that gives me the same tap to my toes that Jean Nate’ does.  I made a little over 2 lbs of soap that I am excited about.

I spent hours this morning playing with scents.  I made one I like and hopefully I won’t explode before the next six weeks are up, when I can try out my creation.  I used:

  • 5.5 ml  Coconut, Lime, Verbena
  • 8 ml      Bergamot
  • 8 ml      Lavender French
  • 7 ml      Frankincense and Myrrh
  • 1 ml       Apricot Spice
  • 2 ml       Lime Cilantro
  • .5 ml      Texas Yellow Rose
  • 2.5 ml   Carnation
  • 1 ml        Lemongrass
  • .5 ml       Spice Cedar

Yes, I know that’s a lot of different scents but I’m a complicated girl.  And I was playing after all.  So, next time I will probably find ways to cut some of the fragrance oils out while maintaining the scent’s cool refreshing effect and keep the balance of the lower notes.  But this deserved a try today.   I made a batch of soap using:

  • 8 oz         Olive Oil
  • 8 oz         Coconut Oil
  • 16 oz      Vegetable shortening
  • 4.6           Lye
  • 14  oz     Distilled water

Then at a light trace I added:

  • 3 oz      half and half
  • 3 victim E capsules (poke a hole and pour into soap)
  • 1 TSP Jojoba
  • 1 TSP Sweet Almond Oil
  • 1.5 oz  My fragrance from above
  • NOTE: I stirred well between each addition.

I will say it took longer to come to a heavy trace than I thought it would.  I do like to pour at a heavy trace.  I think it’s because the one time I did it at a lighted trace it was a false trace.   Now my summer relief is setting up and making me impatient to cut.  But I can wait a day or two if I need too.  It does seem to be a soft moisturizing mixture so far.

UPDATE:  I am currently using this bar of soap (7 – 7 – 10)  It is nice and creamy with a balance of fragrance.  The fragrance came out a little spicier than I expected.  The deeper notes came out in the curing process.  But when reviewing the scents it’s not a complete surprise.  It is a nice scent, not to heavy but not over the top light either, which can be appreciated by both men and women.   It’s sort of like a warm summer breeze if that makes any since to you.  It will move from summer to fall beautifully.

Update Again:  After a few weeks of using the soap, I will half the Bergamot, Frankincense and Myrrh, Spice Cedar, I may even drop the Spice Ceder completely.  I will triple the Carnation and maybe replace Lemongrass with Lemon EO.

Pretty insightful post. Never thought that it was this simple after all. I had spent a good deal of my time looking for someone to explain this subject clearly and you’re the only one that ever did that. Kudos to you! Keep it up
